A TYPICAL PROGRESSIVE CONSERVATIVE GOVERNMENT – WASTING PILES OF MONEY & ATTACKING TORONTO

<“IT’S GOOD TO BE THE KING . . . NEXT!”, editorial cartoon by GRAEME MACKAY, Hamilton Spectator>  Premier DOUG FORD plans to slash nearly half of all TORONTO city council seats before the municipal election on October 22nd. That would mean going from 47 councillors to about 25. Ward boundaries would then match federal and provincial ridings.  Ford is also cancelling regional chair elections in Peel, Niagara and York regions.  A dozen councillors support Mr. Ford’s plan.

<‘SURPRISE!’, editorial cartoon by DAVID PARKINS, Globe and Mail, July 30th/2018>  CANADA’s federal government says it will do whatever it can to protect TORONTO from the “vindictive and destructive” actions taken by Doug Ford and his administration. ADAM VAUGHAN , Liberal Member of Parliament and Parliamentary Secretary for Urban Affairs, says Ford is plunging TORONTO into chaos at a time when it needs stability the most.  Vaughan said the proposal is “reckless, irresponsible” and tosses TORONTO into a political storm when it needs leadership on critical files such as asylum seekers, gangs & guns, transit & housing. Vaughan went on to say Ford is taking these actions because “he doesn’t like Toronto” and accused him of “breaking” the city.  <PHOTO – Adam Vaughan/The Canadian Press>

EYEBALL TO EYEBALL – CHANCELLOR ANGELA MERKEL CONFRONTS ‘POTUS’ AT QUEBEC’S G-7 SUMMIT

Canadians are furious today at some of the tweets made by POTUS, while winging his way to Singapore for a showdown with Kim Jong-Un of NORTH KOREA. And well they should be. Arriving late at the G-7 gathering in La Baie, QUEBEC, and leaving early – the Trumpster more-or-less trashed the Summit and Canada’s Prime Minister. He essentially called Prime Minister Justin Trudeau a liar who made “false statements” about Canada-US trade.DONALD TRUMP – “Based on Justin’s false statements at his news conference, and the fact that Canada is charging massive tariffs to our US farmers, workers and companies, I have instructed our US Reps not to endorse the (G-7) Communique, as we look at tariffs on automobiles flooding the US market.” – Sunday Star, June 10/2018

20 MINUTES AFTER THE POLLS CLOSED, DOUG FORD & HIS TORYS SPRINTED TOWARD VICTORY

<“OH BOY!”, editorial cartoon by THEO MOUDAKIS, Toronto Star, June 8/2018>

ONTARIO woke up this morning to a Progressive Conservative majority government, headed by a controversial premier – DOUG FORD. Torontonians have already enjoyed four years of chaos with Doug’s younger brother – former mayor, the late ROB FORD – and now we’re in for another term of Ford-style governing, only on a much grander scale.

OUT OF 124 SEATS in the Legislative Assembly – Progressive Conservatives 76; New Democrats 39; Liberals 7; and the Green Party 1The New Democrat’s ANDREA HORWATH will head the Opposition. Both the Green Party and the Liberals ‘achieved’ non-party status. Premier KATHLEEN WYNNE saved her seat but will resign as Leader of the Liberal Party,

DON’T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF – SWEAT DISCOVERING YOU’VE BEEN FIRED ON TWITTER

What a way to go – your career ends, you’re out the door, and there’s little recourse. It’s the latest phenomenon in politics and business. POTUS, the class bully, practices it with aplomb by using a spitball (tapping the SEND key). The technique is to catch the target off-guard (sitting on the toilet as in the case of one member of the president’s cabinet), and then hit them on the back or side of the head.

The Twitter President is a showman who sure knows how to work the medium. With a single tweet viewed by millions, and then amplified on news and social media, the victim’s dismissal goes worldwide. In seconds it’s over – but not for the fired ones who must piece their lives back together.

AS AMERICAN YOUTH BATTLES THE NRA, THE LYRICS TO “TEARS ARE NOT ENOUGH” ARE VALID YET AGAIN

With war & famine in Sudan, butchery in Myanmar, bombs galore in Syria & Yemen – and the death of 17 young innocents in Parkland, the song’s lyrics are as fitting today as they were 33 years ago.

On February 10, 1985 a supergroup of top Canadian artists – under the name Northern Lights – crowded into the Manta Sound studio in TORONTO. Over several hours, they laid down tracks for ‘Tears Are Not Enough’, in support of relief projects in Africa and Canada’s food banks.  NORTHERN LIGHTS performers – Gordon Lightfoot, Anne Murray, Burton Cummings, Joni Mitchell, Dan Hill, Neil Young, Bryan Adams, Corey Hart, Bruce Cockburn, Liberty Silver, Geddy Lee (Rush), Mike Reno (Loverboy), Oscar Peterson, Caroll Baker, Eugene Levy, Carole Pope, Salome Bey, Liona Boyd, John Candy, Tommy Hunter, Jane Siberry, Sylvia Tyson, Catherine O’Hare and several others.  <Lyrics © Peermusic Publishing, Warner/Chappell Music, Inc., Universal Music Publishing Group>

“It seems like overnight we see a world in a different light
Somehow our innocence is lost
How can we look away ’cause every single day
We’ve got to help at any cost” . .  .  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pydghC5ZX14

These American firms have cut their affiliations with the National Rifle Association (NRA) – Delta Airlines, United Airlines, Enterprise, Hertz, Avis, Budget, National & Alamo car rental companies, MetLife, Chubb, First National Bank of Omaha, Symantec (makers of Norton & LifeLock computer security software), TrueCar (a car buying service), SimpliSafe (home security). Allied & North American Van Lines, Best Western and Wyndham Hotel Group.  Dick’s Sporting Goods, Walmart & Kroger (grocery). Canada’s Mountain Equipment Co-Op. Amazon, Apple and Roku are advocating stronger gun laws and raising the age limit.

TORONTO WANTED ROAD TOLLS BUT THE EXURBS & PROVINCE SAID “NO!” – HERE’S ANOTHER IDEA

American cities are raking in much needed cash from ride-hailing services to pay for roads, subway signaling systems, taxi industry upgrades and other kinds of infrastructure. This could be one way to help fill the coffers.  It seems to be working south of the border.

CHICAGO levels 65 cents per ride on Uber and Lyft; Massachusetts (Boston) – 20 cents; Portland – 50 cents; New York is thinking about a $2 to $5 charge per ride. This could generate up to $605-million annually for that city’s failing subway system.

CHICAGO officials estimate that ride-hailing companies have cost their city about $40-million each year in lost revenue from transit fares, parking fees, licenses and permits. The ride-hailing tax produced nearly $39-million for the city’s general fund in 2016, up from $100,000 in 2014. The 2017 revenue total is expected to reach $72-million<Photo above – NICO.BLUE/iSTOCK>

IS TORONTO READY FOR ANOTHER RIDE ON THE DOUG FORD MERRY-GO-ROUND? PLEASE, NO-O-O-O-O!

The decision hasn’t been announced yet, but rumours are flying that DOUG FORD is going to take on JOHN TORY in the 2018 run for the mayor’s chair. We thought we’d seen the last of him politically. Apparently not.  Ford’s usual rants are about “the gravy train, taxes, taxes, taxes, suburbs vs downtown, the common folk, the elites, subways, subways, subways, and those horrible streetcars”. We’ve heard it all before and we’ll no doubt hear it all again – once the decision has been made official on Saturday, September 9.
