An unusual series of candid prison mugshots from Sydney, Australia, 1923-30

The photos below were taken in SYDNEY’s Central Police Station back in the roaring twenties.  Unlike most prison mugshots, the subjects here were allowed to present themselves as they wished.  This fine series of prisoner fashion portraits would be right at home in a modern photography gallery. Curator PETER DOYLE has published two books on the subject: City of Shadows: Sydney Police Photography 1912-1948 (Hardback, 240 pages) and Crooks Like Us (Flexicover 320 pages).  PHOTOS BELOW – 1) Mr. Hayes, 1924, crime unidentified and  2) Greta Massey, 1923, imposter, forger and hotel barber.   <PHOTO BELOW – 3) May Blake, 1930, possessor of cocaine>
